During the Nazi's brutal seige of Leningrad Lev Beniov is arrested for looting and thrown in jail. Instead of being executed he and the handsome deserter Kolya are given to option of saving their lives if they can find one dozen eggs for the colonel's daughters wedding cake. In a city of unbelievable deprivation and lawlessness they embark on a hunt behind enemy lines to find the impossible.
